Quick-reference cards

The numbers that must be instant. Print these (Ctrl/Cmd-P — print styles included) and laminate them for the workbox.

1 · Sling angles

  • 90° = 1.0 · 60° = 1.155 · 50° = 1.305 · 45° = 1.414 · 30° = 2.0
  • Minimum angle 30° from horizontal
  • Load/leg = vertical share × factor
  • Field: TF = L ÷ H (tape measure)
Crosby

2 · Hitches

  • Vertical 1.0 · Basket 2.0 (D/d ≥ 25) · Choker ×0.75–0.8
  • Chain choker: −20%
  • Choke angle ≥ 120° or reduce further
  • Eye over fitting ≤ ⅓ eye length
Crosby

3 · Shackles

  • In-line 100% · 90° side load 50%
  • Round-pin: never side-load
  • Two legs ≤ 120° included — in the bow, never on the pin
  • Bolt-type + cotter for permanent installs
Crosby catalog p.94

4 · D/d ratio

  • 25:1 → 100% (wire-rope basket basis)
  • ~3:1 → ~65% · 1:1 → ~50%
  • Roundslings/web: manufacturer minimum hardware Ø
Crosby / WRTB

5 · Safety factors

  • Chain/shackle 4:1 · wire rope 5:1 · fibre/webbing 6:1
  • 8:1 any load over people
  • 10:1 suspension of persons
  • WLL = MBL ÷ SF — document the SF on every point sheet
LPA HG03

6 · Truss

  • Only a single span on 2 supports reads off the table
  • ×0.85 wear factor (ANSI E1.2 / BS 7905-2)
  • Deflection governs long spans
  • Loads into nodes · 3+ supports / cantilever / arc = engineer
Prolyte / ANSI E1.2

7 · Hoists

  • D8: + rated bond to hold over people · never move over people
  • D8+: 10:1, double brake — static hold over people
  • C1: 10:1, dual brake + limits + monitoring — may move over people
  • Discard chain < 90% nominal wire Ø
SQ P2 / DIN 56950 / E1.6

8 · Crane

  • Net = gross − (hook + slings + spreaders)
  • Radius grows under load — no interpolation between rows
  • Counterweight / outriggers / jib must match the chart
  • HOIST 1 long · LOWER 2 short · STOP 1 short · e-stop from anyone
Qld CoP / AS 2550.1 / CICA

9 · Fall protection

  • Free fall ≤ 2 m · body force ≤ 6 kN · anchors ≥ 15 kN
  • Clearance = fall + absorber + stretch + 1 m residual
  • Low grid → SRL, not lanyard
  • Rescue plan BEFORE work — suspension trauma in minutes
AS/NZS 1891

10 · Wind & outdoor

  • Design ≥ 0.75 × ASCE 7 basic · floor 40 mph (≈64 km/h) gust
  • Force ∝ speed² × sail area
  • OMP with trigger thresholds · designated weather watcher
  • Ballast/guys = engineering, not rules of thumb
ANSI E1.21
